Homemade Ketchup/BBQ Sauce: Cuisine HELP

Grilling season is winding down in the midwest, but a low-carb ketchup is always good to have on hand!

You have to be careful with condiments and sauces, most are full of sugar, bad oils, and corn syrup. You can buy keto-compliant condiments in the store, but they are often prohibitively expensive.

I hadn't found a low-carb ketchup that I liked until I stumbled across this recipe. The flavor of this homemade ketchup is great! With some additions it can also be turned into a keto-friendly BBQ sauce.

How I Make It

Follow the recipe below to make the ketchup. If you would like to make BBQ sauce, use 3/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water (rather than the 1/2 cup of each) and add 1/2 tablespoon of liquid smoke. I often double the recipe when I make it since it will keep in the fridge for awhile.

Ingredients

  • 1, 6oz can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup Swerve brown sweetener
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water (a little more if you prefer a thinner consistency)
  • 1/2 tablespoon stevia/erythritol sweetener
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground clove

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. After 20 minutes check the consistency of your ketchup. If its too think add water, a tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  4. Let it cool and then store in a container or squeeze bottle in the fridge.
