Health Care Cost-Sharing Programs: Zion HealthShare

Get a discounted rate on Zion HealthShare with your HELPcare Clinic membership!

Today we continue our series on health cost-sharing programs that can work hand-in-hand with HELPcare Clinic membership.

Zion HealthShare is an exciting option for you to consider when looking for a healthcare cost safety net.

One thing that sets them apart from the healthcare cost-sharing programs we have previously looked at, like Share HealthCare and Samaritan Ministries, is that they do not require a statement of Christian faith for membership.

Another unique aspect of their membership is the discount they offer for members of direct primary care clinics like HELPcare Clinic!

More on this later, but first, let's learn a little more about who they are and what they offer.

A bit of history:

Founded in 2019 near Zion National Park in St. George, Utah, Zion HealthShare is one of the newer healthshare options on the market. While they have only been operating for a few years, they have received positive reviews and are highly ranked compared to other healthshare options.

Zion HealthShare "affiliates itself with, and considers itself accountable to, a higher power" but they don't require their members to be Christians or to agree to any shared religious beliefs.

However, they do have "Principles of Membership" that you would be required affirm and abide by. In short, they ask that you:

  • Believe that a community of ethical, health-conscious people can most effectively care for one another by directly sharing the costs associated with each other’s healthcare needs.
  • Practice good health measures and strive for a balanced lifestyle.
  • Abstain from illicit drug use and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Take care of yourself and your family, and treat others with care and respect.
  • Understand that Zion Healthshare is a benevolent organization, not an insurance company, and that Zion cannot legally guarantee payment of medical expenses.

The details:

Monthly membership rates are determined by the member’s age, household size, and chosen initial unshareable amount (IUA).

Let's start by defining a couple of the keys terms you'll need to know to understand how Zion works.

  • Need—like an insurance claim, a need refers to incident that requires medical attention. For example, if you get in an accident, go to the ER, get x-rays, have surgery, and then receive related physical therapy, all of those services would fall under the same need (i.e. treatment) for your accident.
  • Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA)—is the amount of money you are responsible to pay for a given need before any costs will be shared. This is different from a deductible in that while a deductible is paid annually, the IUA is paid per need. For instance, if you had the accident mentioned above, and then 3 months later have child, you'll be responsible for meeting the IUA for both needs separately. However, you will only be responsible for up to 3 IUAs in any 12 month period, so if you get really unlucky one year, you won't go broke.

Zion HealthShare offers 3 different IUA amounts, $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000.

The higher your IUA, the lower your monthly payment will be.

There is nothing like coinsurance in this system: once you have paid your IUA for a given need, the rest is covered.

According to Zion, most of their members choose the $1,000 IUA, but you will need to decide for yourself how much you are willing to pay out of pocket before the cost-sharing kicks in to cover the rest.

How HELPcare Clinic and Zion HealthShare work together:

At HELPcare Clinic, we provide most of the care that you need for most of your life. Our goal is to keep our members healthy with consistent, affordable primary and preventative care, so that you will have fewer occasions to submit a need request with Zion.

With a Zion HealthShare membership in addition to your HELPcare Clinic membership, you'll have financial protection in case of an accident or other unforeseen health events at substantially lower costs than what you may pay with traditional insurance-based healthcare.

You'll never be disappointed if you go a year without submitting a need with Zion. That's a win!

HELPcare Clinic members will want to

Zion offers the Essential plan which gives better rates for members of DPC clinics like HELPcare Clinic, because they recognize that we help to keep their members healthy and out of the hospital.

Your savings will vary depending on your age, household size, and IUA amount, but HELPcare Clinic members will save roughly 15%-20% on the cost of Zion HealthShare membership.

If you are a 35-year-old with the Member & Family plan, for example, you would save $120 a month. With those savings, you can pay for over 1/3 of the cost of your HELPcare Clinic membership.

Its a win-win.
