FAT: A Documentary

The U.S. government published its first Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 1980, and the USDA Food Guide Pyramid in 1992, spurred by the work of Sen. George McGovern's Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs and its publication of Dietary Goals for the United States in 1977.

And yet, since then we have seen the prevalence of diabetes and obesity triple, along with the identification of metabolic syndrome as a major factor in heart disease, Alzheimer's, and many cancers.

As many of the experts featured in FAT: A Documentary might say, that last sentence doesn't state the reality quite strongly enough.

They would likely change "And yet" to "And so."

If you want a concise, well-told story of how U.S. dietary recommendations got so far off track and what has resulted, FAT: A Documentary does this in a way that's entertaining and sometimes infuriating.

Documentarian Vinnie Tortorich weaves together clips from many of my Health Sherpas, from whom I've learned so much about the defective science behind the low-fat dietary dogma.

This documentary provides a good beginning overview of what's gone wrong in the Standard American Diet (a.k.a. SAD).
