One Step at a Time

I was introduced to HELPcare when it was featured in the November 2022 issue of the Costco Connection member magazine, in an article entitled, “A Path to Thriving- Making lifestyle changes can help reduce or reverse Type 2 diabetes” by Adina Genn.

What jumped off the page for me were quotes by HELPcare founders Lee Aase and Dr. David Strobel. In the article, I learned that they educate people on how to restore health through lifestyle, they know the value of using a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) to see the effect of food on blood sugar, and they know what leads to good diabetes control.

As a registered dietitian and health coach, I likewise believe that lifestyle change is the most effective way to improve metabolic health. I also experiment with wearing a CGM to improve my own metabolic health and to help my clients on their health journey.

Since that initial encounter with HELPcare on the pages of the Costo magazine, I have spent time diving into the HELPcare website and exploring the lay of the land.

I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to have discovered a company that pivots from the traditional government dietary guidelines in order to truly help individuals preserve and restore their health.

A common phrase I use with my clients who feel destined for a life-time of mental and physical health ills, is “Genetics loads the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger.” After making lifestyle changes, many of them are often surprised at how good they can feel and are relieved that they can reduce their medications.

The relationship between lifestyle and health is quite simple- improve your lifestyle, improve your health. But is it easy? Not necessarily. And that’s where “One step at a time” comes in. Every journey begins with the first step, whether it be HELPcare’s mission to restore the soul of health care on a national level, or making an individual behavior change for improved health on a personal level.

Many things are possible. It takes planning, patience and perseverance. You’ve likely learned the phrase, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”, but that isn’t always easy to do. A more effective phrase with my clients is “When the going gets tough, remember your ‘why’!” Being mindful of your “why” (i.e., your deep down reasons for wanting to accomplish your health goal) can strengthen your ability to make the healthy choice, one step at a time.
