HELPcare Challenge Success Story: David Kasel

David improved his health and lost 20 pounds during the first 13-week HELPcare Challenge!

During David’s initial coaching call for HELPcare Challenge, David and his coach reviewed the results of his lab values and his InBody scan (which measures body composition) and set a specific and measurable goal to lose body fat and improve his metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.

David’s “why” (his deep down reason for wanting to achieve this goal) was to have more energy, to remain active, and to keep healthy as long as he could (he had a history of cardiac arrest). He was frustrated with getting tired easily and always feeling short on energy.

Through the weekly group sessions and one-on-one coaching calls, David realized that his diet needed improvement. He was accustomed to eating an ultra-processed, high carbohydrate diet including ordering pop, pizza, and dessert when dining out. He learned how to reduce his carbohydrate intake, going as low as 25 grams of carbohydrate per day when he was in “Beast Mode” (giving it his all).

In addition to using the Green, Orange, and Red food lists on the HELPcare website as a guideline for eating, he also learned how to read food labels to check for carbohydrate content and overall healthiness of food. David began extending his overnight fasting hours and got to 18 hours. He became much more mindful about what and how much he was eating and no longer does the mindless snacking between meals.

As a result of these changes in David’s diet, he was very successful in making progress with both body fat loss and with his overall health. According to David’s pre- and post- lab and Inbody measures, David lost 20 pounds, and his fasting blood sugar went from “pre-diabetes” to “normal” level. His HOMA-IR (indication of insulin resistance) improved to the normal range. His visceral fat level (the dangerous fat that can develop around internal organs) drastically improved.

David attributes his success to being in the HELPcare Challenge. “It’s important to have the accountability to get started and to have the motivation to keep going. The weekly check-ups really helped.”

He says that when he reduced his carbohydrate intake, it reduced his food cravings, which made it easier to eat better. Although it was challenging at first to change his eating habits when he was at frequent family gatherings, now his wife, son, brother, and mom are all interested in improving their diets.

David’s brother has enrolled in the next HELPcare Challenge so that he, too, can reap the benefits that David has. David states, “I’m not on a diet, but rather changed the way I eat, for good.” David is now on a trajectory for further improvement and is excited about making continued progress in his metabolic health.
