Join HELPcare Group Fast I!
Fasting has been a common practice across cultures for millennia. Most world religions encourage some periods of fasting: for example, many Christians will fast next week on Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the season of Lent.
That's why next week seemed a great time to hold our first HELPcare Group Fast.
Besides the spiritual motivation, more recently many scientists and doctors have discovered important health benefits of fasting. That's why we've included fasting as one of the ten elements of HELP: The Health, Energy & Longevity Plan.
What you eat matters, but so does when you eat. Our bodies weren't designed to thrive with the 24/7/365 availability of food we have in western societies today.
You can read more about the science behind fasting (and see some informative videos) in our HELP Explained series, including why my wife Lisa and I do a three-day fast for cancer prevention every other month.

HELPcare Group Fast I will start at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 13. I'll be doing a three-day fast ending Friday at noon.
You don't have to do the full three days to be part of HELPcare Group Fast I: just use this occasion to stretch your fasting muscles beyond what you're accustomed to doing:
- If you normally snack in the evening, cut that out during these three days and fast from dinner to the next morning: a 12-hour fast.
- If you usually have a 12-hour daily fast, consider skipping your morning meal for a 16-18 hour fast
- If you've done 16-18 hour fasts, try one meal a day (OMAD).
- If your typical pattern is OMAD, consider extending to 36-48 hours.
This post explains what's happening in your body, and the health benefits that result, at various points of your fast.
We're encouraging our current HELPcare Challenge participants to join HELPcare Group Fast I, but we're opening it up to anyone who'd like to take this chance to experiment with fasting.
