Reduce Employee Health Plan Premiums while Improving Benefits
At our Save Your Health Plan seminar June 5 at the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, participants learned how an employee health plan with direct primary care (DPC) membership at its core can help employers provide better health benefits while reducing costs.
Colton Storla of North Risk Partners and Matt Ohrt, cofounder of Self Fund Health, joined me to outline the approach and to share real-world examples. Colton explained strategies he and the North Risk Partners team have used, including Health Insurance with HELPcare, which have led to premium decreases of 20% or more for employers while giving employees access to no-cost care at DPC clinics like HELPcare Clinic in Austin and Rochester.
As our keynote presenter, Matt described his experience as Vice President of Human Resources and Medical at Merrill Steel, which had faced health insurance premium increases averaging 9% a year for several years and could no longer afford to shield employees from the increased costs.
The new plan Matt developed, starting with a DPC clinic, led to savings for both Merrill Steel and for employees. DPC membership meant $0 out-of-pocket cost for employees and their families for routine care, along with low-cost or no-cost referral options for imaging and specialty care.
Merrill's health plan premiums were frozen (no premium increases) for seven straight years!
After leaving Merrill Steel, Matt cofounded Self Fund Health to make similar strategies available to other employers.
