Unlock the Power of Fasting!

In this week's episode of Take Charge with HELPcare, hosts Lee Aase and Dan Hinmon delve deep into the topic of fasting as a powerful tool for managing weight, improving health, and enhancing mental clarity.

Lee shares his personal journey with fasting, inspired by Dr. Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code. He began with simple 12-hour overnight fasts and gradually incorporated alternate-day fasting and one-meal-a-day (OMAD) practices. His wife Lisa joined him in an alternate-day fasting routine, leading to impressive, sustainable weight loss and improved energy levels.

Fasting works by lowering insulin levels, allowing the body to shift from burning carbohydrates to burning fat, its natural fuel reserve. Lee emphasizes that while weight loss is a primary motivator, the real benefits extend much deeper. Extended fasting promotes mental clarity through ketone production and triggers autophagy, a process where the body clears out damaged cells and regenerates new ones. This process is associated with longevity and potentially even cancer prevention.

That's why Lee and Lisa have made a practice of doing a three-day fast every two or three months, and when he recorded this episode with Dan he was about 20 hours into his latest 72-hour fast.

Lee also discusses the importance of proper hydration and electrolyte balance during fasting, highlighting the role of LMNT electrolyte packets. He advises consulting with healthcare professionals, especially for those on diabetic medications. Within the HELPcare Clinic, they offer coaching to support people on this journey safely and sustainably.

To make fasting more approachable, Lee suggests starting with small steps: simply stop eating after dinner and delay breakfast, gradually building up to longer fasting windows. He underscores that this lifestyle shift isn’t just about weight loss; it’s about reclaiming control of one’s health and energy.
