Learning from Dr. Dave
HELPcare Clinic Founder David Strobel, M.D., is a gifted communicator who places a high priority on helping patients understand their health.
That's one reason why be believes an unhurried primary care experience is so important: patients need time to learn and ask questions about health issues so they can understand what's going on in their bodies.
Knowledge is power.
Dr. Dave recognizes that if you want to improve your health and increase your chances of living longer and better, lifestyle changes are by far more powerful than medications.
Medications treat symptoms. Lifestyle changes address underlying causes.
Over his more than 30 years of primary care experience, Dr. Dave has learned a lot and done a lot of explaining to patients.

He's gotten really good at it.
He often uses a whiteboard to illustrate and help patients understand.
So as we created HELPcare.health and HELPcare Clinic, I saw an opportunity to record videos of some of the insights he's regularly sharing with patients, and make this practical wisdom available to a broader audience.
That's the origin of the Learning Modules section here on HELPcare.health.
This section will improve the HELPcare Clinic experience because patients can watch these learning videos outside of their appointments with Dr. Dave, and they can ask follow-up questions to understand better how what he's teaching applies in their situation.
Or the videos will reinforce and help patients remember points he has covered in the clinic.
And those who aren't HELPcare Clinic patients can watch and learn, and hopefully have better conversations with their primary care providers as well.
The Learning Modules are included with HELPcare Clinic membership, and through May 31 you can preview them at no charge with your free trial membership in HELPcare Community.
Whatever your stage of life or personal health concerns, you'll find helpful answers from Dr. Dave.
Maybe even answers to questions you didn't know you had!
Here are some of the topics he's covered so far:
- Acne: Causes and Treatments - Though this series you'll understand why acne flares up during puberty, and how various medications can treat its different stages.
- ADHD: A Better Understanding - People with Attention Deficit Disorder often think there's something wrong with them. Dr. Dave explains why this isn't the case, and that ADD could be better understood as a superpower.
- Balance Issues, Neuropathy and Shuffling Seniors - If you've ever wondered why older people often shuffle as they walk, this video series explains it. I learned something in series one that will not only help me walk better as I age, but also will improve my dental health!
- Feeding Your New Baby - Dr. Dave shares practical wisdom on ways to reduce the challenges of introducing various solid foods to your bundle of joy.
- Gallbladder and the Ketogenic Diet - This short module arose from a HELPcare community question, and we thought Dr. Dave's answer would be a helpful resource to share more broadly.
- Importance of Vitamin D - Vitamin D is extremely important for human health. It's also misnamed because it's really a hormone, not a vitamin. Your body makes Vitamin D when your skin is exposed to the right wavelengths of sunlight, so Vitamin D isn't a substance that has to come from outside of your body. And yet with today's indoor lifestyles, the use of sunscreen and the limited times of year when people outside of equatorial zones can get the right type of sunlight, most people are quite deficient in Vitamin D levels. This course is a deep dive into all things Vitamin D.
- Metabolic Syndrome 101 - Almost 90% of Americans have at least one of the five conditions that are part of the official Metabolic Syndrome diagnosis, but too often physicians and other health care providers treat those conditions in isolation instead of exploring whether diet and lifestyle interventions could prevent or even reverse it. Dr. Dave reviews the five core factors that are generally recognized as part if the syndrome, and also describes four others that he believes are related and have important health impacts.
- Metabolic Syndrome 201 - Dr. Dave explains facets of Metabolic Syndrome in significant detail. When you have finished this course you will be able to describe:
- How high blood glucose levels lead to insulin resistance and eventually Type 2 diabetes
- How blood pressure abnormalities develop in the course of metabolic syndrome progression, and why that is cause for concern.
- How cholesterol factors in metabolic syndrome and its relationship to blood vessel disease.
- Why a low-carbohydrate diet is helpful in reversing key biochemical pathways to fight metabolic syndrome.
- Sick Nose Owners Manual - Rhinitis is the medical term for a stuffy nose, and acute rhinitis is a kind of nose inflammation typically caused by allergies or viral infection. Whatever the cause, the basic treatments are the same, and in this video series Dr. Dave describes what you can do to treat redness and swelling, decrease lung inflammation and the cough reflex, and reduce the immune system overreaction that contributes to inflammation.
