The HELPcare and HELPcare Clinic Story

I retired from Mayo Clinic on August 3, 2021 to pursue my third career as the founder of HELPcare LLC, which in addition to providing metabolic health education and support also is the management services organization for HELPcare Clinic.

So this week as I'm celebrating the first anniversary of my career shift, I recorded and produced a series of short videos that tells the story behind my decision to retire from Mayo Clinic and also shows the amazing growth we've experienced in our first year.

Here's the story of my inspiration:

Creating HELPcare

On a parallel track, my wife Lisa and I had been on a five-year health journey leading up to my retirement date, during which we each lost more than 50 pounds.

We believed, and Dr. Dave strongly agreed, metabolic health education and coaching would be a helpful complement to the direct primary care clinic we were envisioning.

We also saw that unlike HELPcare Clinic, which would be geographically limited at least at first to the Austin, Minnesota area, the HELPcare scope could be national or even global.

With 88% of Americans having at least one marker of metabolic ill health, the need for change is both widespread and significant:

HELPcare Community is free, forever as an online educational and community support resource. All you need is an email address to join.

HELPcare Coach is a premium service for those who need or want some personalized help in lifestyle changes. It's available on a monthly or annual basis.

The HELPcare Clinic Difference

HELPcare Clinic provides unhurried primary care through an affordable membership, and is designed to help solve some of the most important problems in U.S.health care:

The core of the HELPcare Clinic model is its membership base, and not accepting insurance of any kind. That reduces costs and administrative complexity, and it also means you don't have a third party getting between you and your provider.

This makes it possible to offer an affordable monthly or annual membership that includes:

  • Unhurried, consistent primary care (standard appointment length is an hour) with no per-visit charges
  • More than 60 of the most commonly needed diagnostic blood and urine tests at no extra charge
  • Many common generic medications at no extra charge, and
  • HELPcare Coach services if desired, at no extra charge.

HELPcare LLC provides management services for HELPcare Clinic, so providers and nurses can focus on the patients without administrative distraction.

As the video above indicates and illustrates, HELPcare Clinic membership doesn't include everything, but it does provide most of the care you need for most of your life.

And as I experienced first-hand, HELPcare Clinic providers can make referrals as needed for hospital and specialty care.
